Obituary
James Williams, who died Feb. 21st, and whose obsequies were performed in this town on Wednesday
last, Feb. 23, was a son of
Jesse and Elizabeth Williams. He was born December 4, 1786, in the Fork district, Dorchester county,
Md., and that was one of a
number of natives of that locality who attained to the remarkable age of ninety years and upwards. It
will be useful for us to recall
and study the history and career of this remarkable man, for remarkable he was, whether we consider
his wonderful vitality, his good
sense , his sterling integrity, his inflexible principles, the strength and force of his will, his genial
disposition, or his success in life. At
the very commencement of his career, he seems to have adopted certain wise and wholesome maxims for
the preservation of his
health and the fruits of his industry, the discharge of his obligations to his family, his neighbors
and society, and his duties as a
citizen of the commonwealth. If we would know the secret of his almost interrupted good health and long
life, it would probably be
found to have been the result of regular habits, an abundance of exercise in the open air, living and
sleeping in well ventilated
apartments, a simple and unstimulating diet, the avoidance of narcotics and a cheerful disposition,
which was rendered more sunny
by the consciousness of the esteem of his neighbors and friends.
